Studio Sanity

I posted this a few years ago and it's still the truth!

Studio Sanity

A few thoughts when all you want to do is paint.

Whatever time you plan to stop painting to prepare dinner, stop sooner because food prep and cooking will always take longer when you’d rather be painting.

Rinse your brushes in turp and cover your palette before leaving your studio. Something will always keep you from returning in a timely manner.

Keep a clean paper towel near your phone to use when you answer another robo call.

The dog will always be on the wrong side of the door so another piece of paper towel is needed for the door handle.

A few hurried brushstrokes will undo an hour’s work.

Unexpected company will arrive when you’re wearing your painting clothes and forgot to comb your hair.

This same company thinks you’d rather sit and “chit chat” instead of paint.

You can understand why Paul Gauguin ran away to a remote tropical island - it’s better than cutting off your ear.

Thankfully there’s always tomorrow.

Dance, 8x10, oil nocturne

Another nocturne painting. I'm thoroughly enjoying my study of nocturnes and prismatic color shifting. I just wish there were more hours in the day. There is still so much more to learn.

Night Travelers, 8x10, oil, nocturne

Years ago my husband and I would drive from Maine to Florida - straight through in 23 hours. We would head to Florida in February and drive back home to Maine in April. We loved to travel at night. We timed our journey so we would be in the congested Washington DC to New York City area in the early morning hours.

I loved the lights, the dark roads and the comforting feeling that we were all alone in the world - just the two of us and our dog.

I saw this photo in a magazine a while back and it stayed with me. I don't know the photographer's name but the scene was so familiar to me. I painted this from a memory of our many night journeys.

I'm not sure if this painting will be for sale. I may have to keep it.

Thanks for visiting with me. I am enjoying my nocturne studies and will have more paintings to share in the days ahead.

Stay safe and well,

Hello Again

Recently a friend reminded me that I hadn't posted to my blog for quite a while. When I looked - I couldn't believe that it's been over a year since my last post! Where did the time go? Thankfully, nothing major happened here. Time just got away from me.

I'm still painting and despite all the nonsense going on in the world, sales have been good both locally and in my Ebay Store.

What's happening in my studio now? Well I'm back to being a student again. I have always been fascinated with night scenes. I love the Chiaroscuro quality of dramatic lights vs dark shadows. I have painted nocturnes before but always thought I needed to learn more about the process of capturing accurate light and color transitions seen at night, especially with artificial lights and neon. I still have a lot to learn and I'm loving the challenge.

Here's my latest painting - just off the easel. I think it is done, but it needs to dry so I can evaluate it again.

Thanks for visiting with me. I hope to post more often now.

Best wishes to you and your family,
